The Prodigal is the 14th episode in S5 of Stargate Atlantis.

Review

I loved it.

And while I guess I could leave the review at that, perhaps I should expand on my opening line. There are a few times in all TV shows where every aspect comes together and gels in such a way to produce a truly classic episode. One that automatically makes the top ten list of favourites and which stands multiple viewings that always reveal something new and interesting. The Prodigal makes that category of classics in a beautifully understated way, with a story filled with character moments, action and drama.

Remnants is the 15th episode in S5 of Stargate Atlantis.

Review

On the surface Remnants has everything it needed to be a spectacular success; the return of one of Atlantis’s best loved villains, Sheppard facing his demons and Woolsey’s command under review. Unfortunately, the mix of elements results in a schizophrenic mish-mash of threads which all come together in an unoriginal ending. The actors do their best, the direction and production quality is as good as ever but, in the end, the basic raw material – the story – is just not good enough.

Brain Storm is the 16th episode in Season 5 of Stargate Atlantis.

Review

Stargate Atlantis takes a step into quirky romantic comedy to highlight green issues with the latest episode Brain Storm. With the focus reduced to the romantic pairing, an Earth-based story and only the thinnest of links back to the wider Atlantis story, the episode bears little resemblance to the usual Stargate Atlantis fare. As a result, it needed to be brilliant in every respect to counteract the audience disappointment in their usual expectations not being met. Unfortunately, while Brain Storm is not a bad episode, it is not brilliant enough to offset the lack of, well, Stargate Atlantis.

Infection is the 17th episode in Season 5 of Stargate Atlantis.

Review

Good team episodes are hard to find but Infection falls into that category with a neat side dish of Sheppard and Todd interaction. Not only is the core team together (even if they are navigating yet another damaged ship), but the inclusion of Keller and Woolsey is appropriate and widens the ‘team’ zoom. The story itself is a solid continuation of the arc, provides some good additional back-story on the Wraith but occasionally slips into clichéd horror. Its real gem is the sub-plot between Sheppard and Todd as in some regards they come full circle.

Identity is the 18th episode in Season 5 of Stargate Atlantis.

Review

In all seasons there is usually that one episode which I dread; Harmony held that honour in Season Four and Identity holds that honour for Season Five. The brief synopsis that I saw before the episode ‘sexy thief changes places with Keller’ was enough that I sat down to watch Identity with low expectations but just as with Harmony, this actually surprised me with how much I enjoyed it. It is fair to say that Neeva is something of a cliché – far too reminiscent of Vala in Prometheus Unbound – but the concept of the story is intriguing, it has a good pace and tight writing. That said, tracking Keller on a forested planet has been done before this season…

Vegas is the 19th episode in Season 5 of Stargate Atlantis.

Review

Vegas is not just a step outside of the box entitled Stargate: Atlantis but an entire leap. On one hand, this is a clever and stylishly told alternate reality story with Sheppard at its centre yet on the other it leaves behind just about everything familiar about the show that the audience has tuned into see beyond the Atlantis mythos itself.

Enemy at the Gate is the 20th episode in Season 5 of Stargate Atlantis and the final episode of the series.

Review

A season finale is always a hard thing to judge but combine it with being the 100th episode and the series finale and it almost becomes impossible. Sentimentality is so mixed up with a wish list of expectations; a great story, action, drama, and a happy conclusion for the characters that we love. Enemy at the Gate makes a fair attempt at delivering a season finale and at delivering a showcase 100th episode, but ultimately, like so many shows where the timing of cancellation results in a restricted timescale to respond, it fails to deliver a satisfying series finale even if the story provides a fortuitous conclusion.

An Unexpected Homecoming

Maybe she hadn’t stepped through the wormhole, Samantha Carter mused bewildered; maybe she had fallen down a rabbit hole instead because the last few moments since her arrival back on Earth seemed bizarre. Either that or maybe the last ten years of her life had finally caught up with her and she had cracked because she just couldn’t believe what had happened. Had she really just been fired from her job? Well, not fired fired because the IOA didn’t have the authority to kick her out of the USAF but they did have the authority to relieve her of the Atlantis leadership and that’s just what they had done.

Apparently.

New skill set needed, her ass. Sam almost snorted out loud.

Bedtime Story

Time. The sound of the clock ticking seemed to fill the house. No matter what room he was in, no matter where he stood, he could hear it ticking. Jack O’Neill was seriously considering shooting the Grandfather clock in the den where he sat and there was only one thing stopping him; she loved it. Samantha Carter had discovered the wrecked antique on their honeymoon in Europe. He had sneaked back to the shop the next morning, bought it and arranged for it to be shipped to their new home in Washington as a surprise for her. It had been worth it to see the happiness in her blue eyes when she’d seen it. Sam had restored the clock to its former glory, the loud tick kept precision time.

Chaos Theory

The moments when the world slowed down long enough for Jack O’Neill to take a breath were rare.

His life seemed to exist in chaos especially since he had moved to Washington and had been appointed Head of Homeworld Security. Each day moved with the speed of a whirlwind: meetings with people who wanted something from him, people he wanted something from and people who just seemed to want to meet people. The politics frustrated him but the challenge of devising the strategy that kept Earth safe engaged him. He might not be the type of General that Washington was used to but Jack did his job well and he had become a power broker in the country’s political capitol just by being his normal taciturn, plain speaking self. It was quickly becoming known that he had the President’s ear, that the Secretary of Defence had him on speed dial and the Joint Chiefs made a point to lunch with him, a lowly two star.

Destiny

Part 1: Destiny Denied

Two months after John Sheppard went missing, and just over a month before he was due to take his long awaited retirement, Jack O’Neill watched as Samantha Carter paced his office.

‘…and the worst of it is the IOA act like it’s not our problem.’ Sam waved her hands in a gesture that reminded him a lot of their friend Daniel Jackson. ‘We’re responsible for what’s happening out there and we have a duty we just can’t walk away from…’

Distance

Aliens had no appreciation for Earth holidays, Samantha Carter grumbled to herself as she made her way out of the confines of Cheyenne Mountain and Stargate Command. She checked her watch anxiously. By her reckoning she would just make it back to the small apartment she rented in time to take Jack O’Neill’s nightly call to her. She knew she could have stayed and taken the call from her lab at the SGC but it was Valentine’s Day and she wanted to take this particular call in private.
